Living with a Nook Color tablet #2: Froyo update

April 25 was a great day for Barnes & Noble Nook Color Tablet users. The update for Android 2.2 (Froyo) was released and B&N opened its new online app store. I opted to download the update directly to my Macbook Pro, then moved it to my Nook Color the morning the update was released. The update went flawlessly. Froyo comes with built in Adobe Flash, and connecting to the full youtube.com site, rather than youtube mobile, now plays all the videos just fine. It's also interesting to me that B&N is now calling the NC a Reader's Tablet rather than an eReader… DOH… B&N is finally admitting that the NC is a full tablet and not just a dedicated eReader. The applications they are offering though, actually are primarily aligned toward a market share of what I would define as avid readers, or educational users, but I have to wonder exactly how Angry Birds, one of the most popular game apps available for mobile devices (and distinctly listed first on their game apps page), applies to readers. On the other hand, I bought it, installed it, and it is fun to play. :-)

The update and apps means I don't have to use my note taking work-around any longer. The B&N app store has Fliq Notes (free) and Fliq Calendar (free) which I immediately grabbed, and had a listing for Quickoffice which wasn't available for download on the opening day of the app store. Two days later, on April 27th, Quickoffice had an active link and at a near give-away price of $7.99, I considered it the deal of the day. I like Quickoffice a lot. I moved a .docx file over to the NC (a short story I'm working on) and Quickoffice readily opens the file, lets me edit, and save the changes keeping the .docx format. Now I can handily write on the go.

There's still a third option for writing or note taking. You could, if you were so inclined, create a roll-your-own app using the Nook Color SDK B&N provides at their Nook Color Developers site in conjunction with the standard Android SDK's and the Eclipse IDE, but I'll talk about that in a later post.
